santa rosa 29 degrees. sebastopol 28. there is cold numbers out there. it will be mostly sunny and very chilly upper 40s and low 50s. here is tara. here's a look at the east shore freeway. you can see traffic moving along nicely. at the bay bridge toll plaza we have no delays as you make your drive into san francisco. let's head back to the desk. 4:59. believe it or not it is now 2013 live picture. look at the big lifts and the kiss. lots of fire works. crowds gathered on the shore of the harbor watching the skyline explode. all the colors of the fire works 2013 is here. 1.5million people expected to be ringing in the new year at this particular celebration and millions are watching on television from home live as we are here in the bay area.

you're also watching this. this is new zealand ringing in the brand new year. 2013. a lot of cheers. the boat horns going off then you have the fire works. this is over the auckland sky tower. new zealand being one of the first nations to welcome the new year. we'll have much more about new years coming in and our local celebrations here in the bay area that is coming up in a couple minutes. it is 5:01. developing news from san francisco an overnight apartment fire caused big problems for firefighters when flames apparently caused a gasline to burst. alex savidge is in san francisco where pg&e crews are making repairs. are they making progress? >> reporter: yeah, they are. they are almost done with their repair work out here. the update i just got from pg&e they are saying this is not a faulty gas line. that is the word from pg&e this morning. essentially this was a very dangerous situation for san

francisco firefighters. they were battling the fire inside of this home. at the same time they were battling a fire that was burning coming from this gas line right out in front of the place. we'll show you pictures as flames from thatgasline were shooting 15 up in the air. crews had to focus on putting out the fire inside the home and eventually pg&e game in and shut off the gas line about 3:00 this morning. the fire broke out just before 1:00 on the 100 block of athens street. four people inside at the time. the man that lives next door is grateful this morning his family made it out safely. >> the neighbor came knocking on my door and when i opened up it was nothing but smoke. my wife was upstairs and ran down with my son. and we just ran outside. the house was on flames pretty bad. >> reporter: sot home is a total loss. again two people were taken to the hospital. the battalion chief didn't have

an update on their condition. we do believe an arson investigator has been called out to try to pinpoint an exact cause for this fire. but again they are trying figure out why that gas line ruptured and burst into flames. a pg&e representative told me they do not believe this was a faulty gas line. they do not believe the gas line itself is what caus caused -- what caused the fire inside the home. the fire inside the home caused the fire to come out of the gas line. so obviously more investigative work for pg&e to do and the fire department to do as well. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. it is 5:03. firefighters continue to look for answers in an apartment fire that killed a couple and their young granddaughter. the fire started saturday night just after 11:00 at a two story apartment building on bridge port court.

56-year-old bomaro his wife and their four-year-old granddaughter kira died in the fire. more than 50 other people were displaced and now being helped by the red cross. janine de la vega will have a live report coming up at 5:30. time is 5:03. just about 16 hours from right now the u.s. economy will go over the fiscal cliff unless congress and the white house can work out a last minute deal. if there is no new budget deal by midnight tonight east coast time income tax rates will go up for all americans. coming up at 5:15 the two men leading the last minute negotiations. the chp is trying to figure out what led up to a crash that killed a motorcycle rider in concord last night. it happened just before 6:30 on kicker pass road. the chp says no other cars were involved and it's unclear why the driver lost control. three people are recovering after a crash after a car crashed into a concord funeral home. it happened yesterday afternoon

at the we met brothers concord funeral chop ill on clayton road. it appears two teens were racing when they lost control and crashed their car into the building. the teens were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. a 66-year-old man who was inside the building has a broken leg. police interviewed a second driver that may have been racing the teens but have no arrests yet. police officers are out there watching for drivers that may be celebrating too much. the holiday enforcement started last friday. it will continue through tomorrow night. the dui check points are in place to catch impaired drivers. the chp says it's particularly dangerous time of the year for drivers and if you do plan to celebrate the new year by drinking, make sure you are with a designated sober driver. the chp also released details about bay area dui related arrests over the

holiday weekend. since friday, the chp made 123 arrests around the bay area. that is actually down from 161 arrests in the same period last year. 5:05. aaa will also help keep drunk drivers off the road this new years eve with its tipsy tow program. they can call aaa for a free ride and tow home for up to ten miles. from 6:00 p.m. tonight until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. you do not need to be a aa member. thousands expected to ring in the new year at a fire works show near the embarcadero. allie rasmus is live to explain how bart and muni are preparing for the big crowd and changes to some routes. >> reporter: and other agencies as well. first of all tens of thousands of people come to the embarcadero for the fire works show. and there are other parties

going on in the city. is a lot of people will not want to take their cars. bay area transit agencies are making it easier for them to leave their cars behind by offering free rides in some cases and extended service. starting with bart. bart you will still have to pay for your tickets but their trains will be running late tonight until 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. but in order to avoid congestion, trains will not be stopping at all the stations. keep this in mind if you are riding the pepper bay point train it will stop at the embarcadero station. make sure you go to the right place to catch your ride home. muni is also extending service at the west portal and embarcadero stations. muni will run until 4:00 a.m. new years day. and fourth and king muni will run until 2:15 a.m.. muni will be free for riders starting from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.. caltrain and samtrans will be giving free rides.

the last train will leave at 2:15 a.m.. there are a lot of options, three free options for those looking to enjoy new years eve celebrations in san francisco. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. well because it's the new year, starting tomorrow alameda county grocery stores and most other stores that sell food or alcohol can't give out plastic bags to customers. in place of the single use bags, stores can use paper or reusable bags. but they will have to charge you at least a dime for every bag. customers are encouraged bring your own bag when you shop. restaurants by the way can still give plastic bags to their customers. >> once you get in the habit of doing that it's very helpful. it is 5:08. let's check in with tara. a lot of chp expected on the road. >> definitely do not drink and drive. take mass transit or a cab

it is 5:13. yet again the country is waking up to news that lawmakers in washington, d.c. still don't have a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. kyla campbell reports we are just hours away from automatic tax increases and government spending cuts. >> reporter: frustration is hitting a speak this morning after talking stalled last night. the house and senate will get back to work over the next few hours. senators have been trying to come up with a deal but with no luck. new mitch mcconnell is negotiating with vice president joe biden. if political leaders can not come up with a plan by midnight tonight tax rates for all americans will increase. >> if there is an ultimate compromise, there will be parts of it i find disgusting and rep hencable which i may have to swallow in the name of finding a compromise. >> reporter: how will this

effect you come tomorrow morning? if there is not a deal reach there won't be a drastic change in your next paychecks. if this plays out long-term the average american middle class family stands to lose out on $2,000 to $3,000 over the next year due to the increased taxes. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. 5:14 meanwhile with all the focus on the fiscal cliff a new bill to prevent the so-called dairy cliff is sitting on the back burner. leaders agreed to a one-year extension of the expiring u.s. farm bill. so far there is no house vote scheduled without passage of the bill milk prices could double next month. estimates are a gallon of milk could go up to $8 a gallon. u.s. senate report on the attack in benghazi blames the state department depth for not

having a plan to rescue americans. this report says the state department failed to respond to increasing security threats in benghazi. in the future the state department needs to decide if they can provide adequate security for diplomats and where it can't do it american personnel need to be taken out of those postings. hillary clinton remains under observation after being treated for a blood clot. a spokesman says they discovered the clot during a follow up exam for the concussion she suffered two weeks ago. she had a stomach virus when she fainted. she is being treated with blood thinners for the blood clot. venezuelan leader hugo chavez is suffering new complications. venezuelan's vice president describes his condition as

delicate. he has not been seen or heard in public since december 11th when he under went surgery. it was his fourth cancer related operation. government leaders say chavez may miss his january 10th inauguration marking his sixth presidential term. time now 5:16. sal is off but tara is here. and so far so good. >> reporter: no news is good news. out on the roadways everything is looking clear. we have a couple construction projects wrapping up. really nothing too major. that is the good news. if you need to head out to work, that is a -- head out to work, now is a good them. the folks on the right are headed into marin county. at the bay bridge toll plaza we have no delays. there is a lot more people out on the roadways. this may be returning to the normal workweek. we still do have the holidays. not sure how many folks have the day off. finally san mateo bridge you can see traffic on the right hand side there westbound as you make the drive toward

foster city. here's steve. tara you just tweeted. >> i did. i just tweeted to you. >> you said it's cold in d.c., daily city. we have mostly clear say -- clear skies. the temperatures and the dew point have not come together. that's why if there is any fog it's mostly clear. cold, frost, mostly clear. mostly fair this afternoon. i say that because there could be a few high clouds. high temps will be very cool. there is a bunch of upper 20s just not showing up here. 35 san jose. i've seen 32 los gatos. a bunch of 30s santa cruz mountains. but it's really cold up in the mountains. 36 sacramento. 29 in eureka. we will have the system coming in. it looks good but it's heading toward southern california. we'll get spill over some of the higher clouds.

pattern is changing. it really is. i think we're going kind of quiet here. first couple weeks in january looks that way to me. things could change. it does not look very rainy at all for us. mostly sunny today to partly cloudy. upper 40s to low, low 50s. unless you are closer to around the bay than that will be about it. if you are heading out tonight it will be cold. bundle up it will be dry. maybe right along the coast. i think cold is the main word here. looks kind of a quiet pattern. there will be a little low dropping down on tuesday. looks dry wednesday, thursday, friday. maybe clouds rolling in by the weekend. it is 5:19. european markets are trading in a narrow range as investors worry about the u.s. meeting its midnight budget deadline. in asia markets ended the year in losses. australian, new zealand and south korea were all down

nearly a half a percent. and taking a look at where the markets will started. it was a down day on friday. big drop for the dow. futures are upright now for u.s. markets. however that could change once the cash markets open if there is no progress it looks like it's happening in washington, d.c. with the fiscal cliff talks. the markets will be closed tomorrow in the u.s.. ford says when all the numbers are tallied, 2012 will have been a good year. the country's second largest auto maker expects it sold 2.2 million vehicles this year. that would make it the second consecutive year it sold more than two million cars, trucks, and suvs. time now 5:20. ready or not the new year means

welcome back. time now 5:23. new this morning some city employees in san rafael are being paid to car pool or use mass trap sit. starting tomorrow almost 370 employees will be paid to find eco friendly ways to get to work. employees who car pooled for at least two months they will get $50. peoples who use mass transit will get a $20 clipper card. video game developer zynga is signaling game over for 11 of its offering. zynga is eliminating mafia war 2 and pet world. they are laying off more than 100 workers in cost cutting moves. san francisco based company is trying to recover after

watching the stock value fall more than 70% this year. gwynn georgia is offering -- zynga is offering virtual currency. it's 5:24. the start of the new year also marks the beginning of a new state-wide sales tax. california sales tax will increase one quarter percent up to 7.5% thanks to voter approved proposition 30. that translates to an $86 difference on a big ticket item like a honda accord. for some shoppers the increase is small in comparison to other economic concerns. >> the uncertainty. the fiscal cliff and how things will pan out. >> the increase will last for four years. the good news for consumers though is the sales increases does not apply to gas. time now 5:25. 49ers fans could be heard chanting bye as the team

clenched the nfc east title at home. the niners beat the arizona cardinals yesterday 27-13 and michael crabtree caught 8 passes. 172 yards and two touchdowns including that one. that win means the 49ers will have an extra week to get ready before hosting a divisional round game saturday, january 12th. they will either play the packers, sea hawks, or redskins. they lost to the san diego chargers third quarter the raiders rallied from 17 points down to come just three points shy of heading into overtime. but the chargers ended up winning 24-21. the raiders won only four games this season. time now 5:26. big sports fan tara moriarty is here. but she's focusing on traffic this morning. right? >> that was a great game. you had to be so excited for the collin. that was great. a lot of excited people in our

happening right now in san francisco pg&e crews are out there fixing a broken natural gas pipeline. it is blamed for an overnight house fire. this all happened about 1:00 a.m. an athens street. look at these pictures. broken gas lines sent those flames shooting into the air. firefighters said they had to work around it. two people living inside. they were taken to the hospital. treated for smoke inhalation. coming up at 6:00 we'll wring you a live report from the scene. it's 5:32. firefighters in san jose continue their fire investigation in an apartment fire that killed three people including a young girl. janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us the fire also left many people without a home. janine. >> reporter: it's been a trying weekend for the people who live in this apartment complex. you can see they have quarantined off this part of the apartment complex. put up a chain link fence. right above it you can see the apartment where the fire ripped

through. they bordered it up and there is a lot of damage in there. the fire burned through some of the walls. yesterday families came back to these apartments on bridge port court to gather essential belongings. they are helping the dozens of people that were displaced by the fire that broke out here on saturday night. 56-year-old balmaro his wife and four-year-old granddaughter kira died before fight fears could get to them. the little girl's mother is grief stricken. neighbors feel for the family. [speaking in foreign language] >> this woman tells us she feels so sad this happened but says they are in help now. material things can be fixed but lives can not. arson investigators spent the day interviewing witnesses and combing through rubble trying to figure out how the fire started. still no word on a cause. we do know a san jose police

officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but he has been released from the hospital. residents are staying in motels provided by the red cross. they were told that they will probably have to be put up for a couple more days before they can return. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. 5:33 in petaluma firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that sent flames shooting from the garage of a home. the fire broke out around 5:30 last night. firefighters say everyone inside the home was able to get out safely. damage was estimated at $200,000. your time 5:34. religious and community leaders in oakland will be gathering this afternoon. they are remembering the city's 131 homicide victims in 2012. that vigil begins at 3:00 p.m. today. oakland police still searching for whoever shot and killed a 15-year-old girl yesterday afternoon in broad daylight. authorities think the suspect

is 13-16 years old. this all happened when that teenager was walking with friends through the lion creek crossing housing project. that is when the shooter opened fire on the group. family members and friends gathered trying to consul each other. >> i have to go back home and live on the same street they live on and mourn their death. and realize i thought she would be able to make it back to school on the seventh. when school is back from winter break. >> a second victim a 13-year- old boy is recovering from nonlife threatening injuries. authorities are going over surveillance video. also questioning witnesses in the shooting. trying to find some answers. now we know the names of two young men killed in west oakland last friday. 21-year-old darrell armstrong and 19-year-old keith davis was shot and killed on immediate avenue. they were friends and armstrong lived near that shooting scene.

police say the investigation continues. it is 5:35. tomorrow will be four years since the shooting death of  oscar grant. grant was shot and killed by bart police officer johan necessary mehserle on the platform of the bart fruitvale station. the shooting was captured on cell phone video and the jury convicted mehserle of involuntary manslaughter. 5:36. security breach at palms spring caused a one hour delay in flights and operations out there. this happened about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. a man went past security without being screened. the airport executive director says he was not arrested because investigators don't think he had any malicious intent. 5:36. as many as 250,000 people are expected to pack san francisco's waterfront to watch

the new years eve fair show tonight. that could make for a big wait for crowds to get home after midnight. allie rasmus is live to explain the changes the transit agency is making. >> reporter: market street is behind us. it's pretty empty. fast forward about 18 hours from now this street will be full of new years eve partyers. with all the people in the city and plenty of new years toasts it's a good idea to leave your car behind and take public transit. take advantage of the free rides. starting with muni. muni will be free starting at 8:00 until 6:00 a.m.. other transit agencies will be doing the same thing. and the last caltrain line will leave san francisco at 2:00 a.m.. and in san jose vta rides will be free after 7:00 p.m.. on abort you will have for your ticket be sure to use

a clipper card or buy a round trip ticket. trains on bart will be offering extended service. they will be running until 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. in order to avoid congestion, trains will not be stopping at all the stations. pittsburgh bay point trains will stop at the montgomery station. make sure you go to the right station to catch your ride home. the daily city train will be stopping at all san francisco stations. heading from san francisco out to the east bay. bart will also run longer trains after the nur years eve fire work finishes up. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. it will be one of the busiest days of the year for many bay area good will stores. it's all because of their

livermore. i saw 31 there. concord 31. santa rosa 35 below. that will cut right through you. and 36 in sacramento. it's cold for everybody even ukiah. when that happens it will go more toward southern california. in fact, that has been the pattern here if you notice lately things have been changing. the lows come in. yes, we got rain late friday and saturday. it was very active down in southern california yesterday. our system watch right here in the cloud there it goes. it's just kind of dragging across clouds and then after that it will be dry i think the rest of the week. mostly sunny today. increasing clouds later on. cold morning. highs upper 40s, low 50s. unless you are right by the bay. temperatures will be a little warmer.

for everybody in america opinion it is 5:45. it's been one year since a five- year-old boy was shot and killed near his family's taco truck in oakland. yesterday friends and family honored the life of gabriel martinez junior in front of the taco truck where he was hit by a stray bullet. police say the gunman ordered food from the truck and then started shooting. gabriel's family is calling on police to solve this in the new year. >> we are just angry. >> i don't hear anything. yet. i don't know if they do something about it. it's already past a year. >> police have release the video of the car that he used to get away. and a sketch. but police have not made any arrests in the case. livermore looking for more clues after a body was found

with several gunshot wounds. a jogger found the body near galaxy court just about 7:30 yesterday morning. the victim identified as kenneth o.k. don of livermore was pronounced dead at the scene. about 30 people showed up at a vigil for him last night. also this morning police are searching for a man who stabbed two teenagers at azurean california mall. it happened yesterday at the south bay galleria. police say a man approached a 13-year-old boy and a girl outside of a movie theater at the mall. stabbed them in the chest. they are listed in stable condition after having surgery. they think the attack was unprovoked and the teenagers didn't know their attacker. 5:47. starting tomorrow bart will begin giving preference to veterans when it comes to filling vacant positions. the policy was adopted earlier this month by the bart board of

5:56. at least nine people are dead and dozens injured after a tour bus crashed on an icy highway in oregon. in an area known as dead man pass. the bus careened through a guardrail before plunging 100 feet down an embankment. the bus was traveling from las vegas to vancouver british columbia. the bus driver survived the crash but has not yet spoken to police due so his juries.
